Strengthening the Front Line of Tourism in West Sumbawa

Jakarta, 13 December 2023 – PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMMAN), one of the largest copper-and-gold-mining companies in Indonesia, is supporting the empowerment of local communities through the Tourism and Hospitality Training Program for young people in West Sumbawa. By developing individual capacity, this initiative will open wider employment opportunities or create new jobs to improve welfare for the people of West Sumbawa.

AMMAN has been conducting this five-month training program in collaboration with Yayasan Bije Jari, a local skills-development organization, since 2021. The program is implemented in a holistic fashion, involving various sectors of the community down to the individual level to reduce unemployment rates and optimize individual skills.

Over the past two years, 199 young men and women of West Sumbawa have benefited from Tourism and Hospitality Training. Of the 179 participants, 94% went on to work for hotels and other tourist-service providers while six percent started their own businesses. Of these new tourism professionals, 91% remained in West Sumbawa, seven percent work in Lombok, and two percent are employed in other provinces.

AMMAN’s contribution to the development of the younger generation of West Sumbawa was recognized recently by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) when the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal awarded the ‘Tambang Menyejahterakan Masyarakat’ (Tamasya) 2023 in the Implementation category.

The Ministry of National Development Planning sees Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara as tourism and creative economy industry clusters (Bappenas, 2023). Two priority areas, Mandalika Special Economic Zone in Lombok and Labuhan Bajo in Flores are already being developed into international-standard tourist destinations.

Blessed with natural beauty and cultural authenticity, West Sumbawa has the potential to join the ranks of quality tourist destinations. The area is already well-known for the coral reefs of Kenawa and world-class surfing at Sekongkang.
