At AMMAN’s copper smelter facility, the control room screens never rest. Behind those glowing panels, the smelter team works with precision—making sure the temperature and pressure inside the flash smelting furnace stay right on target.
Precision temperature control is crucial to the double-flash technology employed in the smelter. This technology allows the refining process to run more efficiently by utilizing heat from the oxidation reaction—so that external energy requirements can be reduced significantly.
As the name suggests, double-flash smelting is implemented in two stages: flash smelting and flash converting. In the first, the copper concentrate is heated with oxygen and natural gas to 1,270°C, producing copper matte. Flash converting then melts the matte at a temperature of 1,240°C to produce blister copper.
"This technology not only produces the best-quality copper, but also reduces costs and sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide emissions. This is proof that innovation can go hand in hand with sustainability," said Kartika Octaviana, Vice President of Corporate Communications at AMMAN.
At AMMAN, technology is about more than efficiency—it is about employee empowerment. "We apply integrated technical solutions to free our teams from manual work, giving them the time and resources to work smarter and increase productivity and efficiency. This reflects our core values as well as our vision and mission," she added.
The AMMAN copper smelter and gold refinery is now in the final stages of commissioning. With a projected capacity of 900 thousand tons of concentrate per year, this facility will produce 222 thousand tons of pure copper cathode, 830 thousand tons of sulfuric acid, as well as associated metals such as gold, silver, and selenium.
