Behind the Green Landscape of Batu Hijau Mine
West Sumbawa, 26 June 2026 — For Jorina Waworuntu, the environment is not merely a term found in documents, regulations, or operational reports. It is a living space. It exists in the water we use, the air we breathe, the ground beneath our feet, the plants around us, and the people who form part of the ecosystem itself. In her view, protecting the environment is not only about fulfilling obligations; it is about safeguarding the quality of life itself.

This perspective has been shaped by more than two decades of living and working at the Batu Hijau site. As the Head of AMMAN’s Environment Department, Jorina leads a team responsible for ensuring that the company’s operations comply with regulations while continuously improving environmental management practices. Yet for her, success is never the result of one person’s efforts alone.

“The environment is a shared responsibility,” she said. “What makes a system work is people who have commitment and consistency.”

Her message is particularly relevant on World Environment Day 2026, which carries the theme ‘Urgent Climate Action and Ecosystem Restoration.’ According to Jorina, climate change is no longer a distant issue. Its impacts are increasingly visible through increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, extreme rainfall, and longer dry seasons. These conditions serve as a reminder that every sector, including the mining industry, has a role to play in maintaining environmental sustainability.

At AMMAN, this commitment begins with the most fundamental principle: compliance. Compliance is not simply about meeting regulatory requirements; it is the foundation for building responsible operations. For this reason, environmental management is supported by a comprehensive system that includes planning, infrastructure, training, and employee competency development.

One tangible example of this commitment is land reclamation. By the end of 2025, AMMAN had reclaimed 859.61 hectares of land, including its largest annual reclamation achievement in Batu Hijau’s history in 2025, covering 92.67 hectares. Reclamation is not merely about replanting land. It involves a long and carefully managed process, from soil salvaging, land reshaping, erosion control, and cover crop seeding to planting and maintenance.

This commitment also extends beyond the operational area. AMMAN has carried out watershed rehabilitation across approximately 3,600 hectares, supported social forestry programs, advanced marine conservation in Gili Balu through Transformasea, and contributed to sea turtle conservation along the southern coast of Sumbawa. These initiatives demonstrate that environmental protection requires collaboration among companies, government, and communities.

In its efforts to reduce emissions, AMMAN continues to strengthen its transition toward cleaner energy. Since 2022, a 26.8 MWp solar power plant has been in operation and, throughout 2025, helped avoid approximately 34,794 tons of CO₂e emissions. At the same time, the company is also developing a 450 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) powered by gas as part of its transition toward a lower-carbon operational profile.

Beyond energy, water management remains a key priority. To strengthen resilience during the dry season, AMMAN has built desalination facilities in Benete and Sejorong, while also optimizing water reuse across its operations. Meanwhile, the use of satellite imagery enables the company to monitor changes in land conditions more quickly, allowing environmental management to be carried out more accurately and based on data.

Yet behind all the infrastructure, technology, and large-scale programs, Jorina believes that people remain the determining factor. In her view, environmental awareness is built through daily habits: using energy and water wisely, reducing waste, maintaining clean work areas, and complying with every environmental procedure. She herself regularly takes part in annual tree-planting activities as a simple yet consistent expression of commitment.

For Jorina, climate action does not always begin with grand gestures. Instead, small habits practiced consistently can become the foundation for broader change. This is the philosophy she continues to carry in leading environmental management at AMMAN.

From Batu Hijau, Jorina’s story serves as a reminder that sustainability is not merely a target or a corporate program. It is a long-term journey built on discipline, collaboration, and care. Because ultimately, protecting the environment means protecting life: today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
