From Sumbawa to the National Stage: Bale Berdaya and the Rise of MSME

Sumbawa Besar, 24 March 2025
– Alongside the natural beauty of the island of Sumbawa in eastern Indonesia, lies a growing economic force: local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) striding toward national prominence. The year 2024 marked a turning point for these enterprises with the launch of Bale Berdaya, a strategic collaboration between PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMMAN) and KUMPUL, a commercial networking facilitator. This initiative aims to foster sustainable local economic development. More than 100 MSME across seven districts—Sumbawa, Lantung, Lenangguar, Lunyuk, Moyo Hulu, Orong Telu, and Ropang—have already reaped tangible benefits from the program.

From Struggles to Breakthroughs
Following their participation in Bale Berdaya in 2024, MSME participants saw their average revenue double. In addition to financial growth, many secured essential business requirements, including Business Identification Numbers (NIB) and Halal certification, which assures consumers that the products conform with Islamic food standards. These achievements have inspired MSME to expand into wider markets.

Sumbawa District Head Syarafuddin Jarot expressed strong support for the initiative. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to attend the Bale Berdaya exhibition, which showcases MSME supported by AMMAN and KUMPUL. Empowering MSME is a key priority for the local government, and Bale Berdaya has made significant strides toward this goal. Access to capital, technology, business sustainability, and marketing are among the main challenges MSME face, and this program has provided valuable guidance in these areas,” he stated.

He further emphasized the government's commitment to MSME empowerment, particularly in facilitating access to funding and market opportunities. We will prioritize locally produced MSME goods for official government events, both as consumables and souvenirs,” he added.

From Local to National: The 2025 Roadmap
Building on the success of 2024, Bale Berdaya is advancing into the next phase. In 2025, the program will focus on strengthening partnerships, expanding market access, and improving funding opportunities to help Sumbawa’s top MSME break into national and even international markets.

This year, over 100 local entrepreneurs, from artisans to farmers, are joining the initiative to drive sustainable economic growth. Six nationally recognized mentors and investors will provide guidance, while local government bodies, corporations, startups, and microfinance institutions will collaborate to ensure the program’s success.

AMMAN Vice President of Social Impact Priyo Pramono emphasized the program’s strategic goals. Bale Berdaya is part of the AMMAN Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM), designed to support entrepreneurship in Sumbawa and help small businesses grow into medium-sized enterprises. We hope the MSME nurtured through Bale Berdaya will become self-sufficient and play a vital role in the local and national economy,” he added.

Over the next five months, participants will receive mentorship from Residence Buddies—local youth trained to assist MSME development in their respective districts. Additionally, industry experts will provide intensive business coaching to equip entrepreneurs with optimal strategies for scaling their ventures. In August 2025, participants will showcase their products and business models at the MSME Exhibition and Business Networking Event.

KUMPUL Managing Director Mega Prawita reaffirmed the organization’s commitment: Together with AMMAN, we are dedicated to supporting Sumbawa’s top MSME through comprehensive mentoring and access to broader networks. We believe this collaboration will help these businesses expand into national and international markets.

The 2025 Bale Berdaya Launch
The official launch of Bale Berdaya 2025 took place at the Bale Berdaya Synergy Meeting in the Sumbawa district office on 20 March 2025. The event brought together key stakeholders to foster collaboration and strengthen partnerships.

Participants attended workshops on digital marketing and financial management, engaged with experienced mentors, and exchanged knowledge through Bale Talks—panel discussions covering legal literacy, funding access, and business development strategies.

Among the major supporters of the initiative is TikTok Shop by Tokopedia, one of Indonesia’s leading e-commerce platforms. Recognizing the potential of Sumbawa’s MSME, the company is offering training sessions on online marketing and sales through its Local Business Empowerment initiative.

TikTok Director of Tokopedia and E-commerce Vonny Susamto highlighted the significance of this collaboration. We strongly support the AMMAN Bale Berdaya program, as it aligns with our mission to enhance education, create economic opportunities, and help MSME thrive—particularly in Sumbawa–in the digital era.”

She added, This initiative includes onboarding MSME onto TikTok Shop and providing comprehensive online business development training. The MSME sector contributes over 60% of Indonesia’s GDP, making their growth essential to national economic progress. Through partnerships like Bale Berdaya, we remain committed to advancing MSME and fostering digital economic growth.

With widespread support and the determination of its participants, Bale Berdaya stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and effective execution in driving real economic change.
